What is a learning outcome?

A learning outcome is a clear and specific statement of what students are expected to learn and to be able to demonstrate following study of a course, session, or unit of study.

Why have learning outcomes?

Learning outcomes are an important part of a curriculum. Once you have determined the learning outcomes for your students ( what you want them to learn) then you are able to create learning materials, activities etc to help your students to attain the learning outcomes. They are also important for then determining to what depth or standard you require your students need in attaining the learning outcomes which enables you to then plan your assessment or assignment tasks to match.
